Rawmarsh Man Scoops International Media Award
2016-10-05
A Rawmarsh man was celebrating last night after scooping an International award for contribution to local media. Dave Meddler from Greasbrough Lane received the prestigious Resident En Colere award after several weeks deliberation by the judging panel based in Paris which is in France.
The literal translation of Resident En Colere is ‘angry resident’ and the award is given to a local citizen who is regularly featured in his or her local newspaper pointing at things and looking angry. It seems that Dave’s award is well-deserved. In the past 12 months alone he has been featured pointing at a pot hole on Rawmarsh Hill, three bags of rubbish left by gypsies in New Stubbin, and a graffiti penis in Swinton. Few readers of the Rotherham Advertiser will ever forget his furious expression when pointing out the site where a council bin lorry almost ran over his foot in 2013.
Retired Dave is modest about his success. “It’s all about being in the right place at the right time,” he told us. “That and having a naturally miserable demeanour, nothing much to do with your time, and a couple of lazy and desperate local reporters on speed dial.”
Despite the award, Dave isn’t finished yet “I dream of the big time” he said “Receiving one of those computer generated letters from a public utility saying I owe a million quid. I could go global with something like that.”
And he even has plans to take his local media stardom beyond the grave. “Just imagine,” he enthused “It’s a couple of weeks after the funeral, and our Brenda discovers an empty Tenants Extra can on my headstone. She’ll definitely get in the paper pointing at that. What finer epitaph could I have?” It seems you can never keep a good man down.
