Confusion As Advice To Wash And Double Bag Clothes Extended To Barnsley
2018-03-12
There was confusion this morning, as the advice from Public Health England (PHE) to thoroughly wash, scrub or double bag clothes and possessions, was extended from a small area of Salisbury to the south Yorkshire town of Barnsley.
The advice was originally issued to around 500 Salisbury residents yesterday, who may have been in the vicinity of the recent nerve agent attack on a Russian double agent and his daughter. So an extension to a town some 220 miles away has come as something of a surprise.
When the anomaly was pointed out, Public Health England officials were at pains to point out that there is no immediate danger to people in the South Yorkshire town, and the advice is unrelated to any concern over potential nerve agent contamination.
“It’s an unfortunate coincidence“ a spokesperson from PHE told the Bugle. “One of our officials was in Barnsley town centre recently and an off the cuff remark about observations made there, and unconnected to the events in Salisbury, may been taken out of context by one of our junior staff and put forward as official advice. We’d like to apologise for any offence or distress caused.”
