How Well Do You Know The Highway Code?

How long is it since you looked at the Highway Code? If you passed your driving test a number of years ago, we’d wager it’s a long time. And that’s a worry because things change. With that in mind, we’ve compiled some recent additions to the Highway Code which you may have missed. Here are the top ten:
- You may carry an item of any length, hanging out of the back of a passenger vehicle, provided you tie a bit of old rag to it.
- Letting another car out of a junction is permissible, but only where that car is worse than the one you’re driving.
- All parking restrictions such as those covered by double yellow lines, no stopping signs and pedestrian crossings may be disregarded by switching on your warning hazard lights.
- The right-hand lane of a dual carriageway should only be used for overtaking or when you have a vague idea you might want to turn right sometime during the next 5 miles.
- Drink driving laws are advisory, rather than mandatory, for anyone who passed their test before 1975.
- The use of indicators on roundabouts is optional but should remain arbitrary to keep other drivers on their toes.
- After a minor collision at a roundabout, you must leave both vehicles in the exact spot where the collision took place, so that a build up of traffic can ensue. On no account move the vehicles to a safe position away from traffic to exchange insurance details.
- On Motorways it is advisable to drive three feet from the bumper of the car in front to encourage swift progress and save fuel via the slip streaming effect.
- Parking outside schools is forbidden unless you are driving a 4×4 or it’s raining.
- Women should only apply makeup at traffic lights if they are particularly unsightly without it,
