Bake Off Brawl In Brinsworth

Police made several arrests last Wednesday evening after being called out to what onlookers described as  ‘a Wild West style brawl’ between members of the Townswomen’s Guild and the Women’s institute in Brinsworth. It’s understood that the fight broke out between  the two rival groups during a local Mary Berry inspired charity Bake Off event at the local community centre on Brinsworth Road.

“It all seemed very polite at first” said one local resident who didn’t want to be named for fear of reprisals, “Pleasantries were exchanged, and there was even the odd joke.  Then one of the Women’s institute members made a  sotto voce comment about The Townswomen’s Guild scones being like fossilised dog turds. An elderly lady from the Townswomen’s Guild retaliated by saying she wouldn’t use the WI’s Victoria Sponge to wipe her arse with, and that’s when  it all kicked off. Next thing they were going at each other like a pair of biker gangs, and it all spilled over into the car park. It was horrible. I’ve never seen octogenarians sticking the nut on like that before. There was flour everywhere.”

A Rotherham police spokesman confirmed that they had attended an incident at Brinsworth community centre last Wednesday evening at around 7.00pm  and eight women between the ages of 71 and 87 had been arrested and charged with public order offences. It’s understood that several weapons were also recovered at the scene including  three rolling pins, two large serving spoons and a cheese grater.

Both groups were unrepentant when we contacted them for comment last night. A spokesperson for the WI said the Townswomen’s Guild would “get some” when their paths crossed again,  while the Townswomen’s guild press officer Camilla Prior -Walker angrily pledged to “finish them slags once and for all next time.”

Local vicar Anthony Jones says he feels responsible for the fracas because he organised the event and allowed both groups to participate.  “I should have been more careful” he said “there’s been bad blood between these two since last years flower arranging  play-off final and they just couldn’t wait for an opportunity to get stuck in to each other again.”
